Day 8 - (05/10) Tupelo, MS to Troy, AL

Carol is really struggling with a cough.  We’re trying various OTC concoctions.  She has to sit upright to get any relief and gets very little sleep.

Fortunately, the weather is nice … in the high 80’s, sunny.  The 268 mile drive today took us from northeastern Mississippi to southeastern Alabama.  The Route:  US 78 east from Tupelo to Birmingham, I-65 south to Montgomery, then US 231 south to Troy, AL.

We have no on-the-road pictures.  Here are some observations.

+ The roads were good.
+ There were few signs of high water.
+ We saw tornado damage in Birmingham.  It looked like a strip of the city over a mile long had just blown up.  Buildings were leveled while adjacent areas looked almost untouched.  It was a very sad sight.
+ The drive through/around Montgomery was a delightful surprise.  The city looked alive and prosperous.  The streets were clean and homes well-kept.  We felt welcomed even though we were just passing through.  Maybe the feelings were the result of a pretty, sunny day.  It was nice to see after the flooding and tornado devastation of the past days.

We ended the day at Deer Run RV Campground, a few miles north of Troy.  This is a very nice campground.  It’s well maintained, the sites are level and attractive.

After unhitching, we drove into Troy for a look-see.  It’s a college town. Troy University is the second largest university in the state.  We found Hook’s BBQ for dinner.  It’s one of many chains that claim to be the best.  It was a paper plate, paper towels for napkins kind of place.  The meal was OK, the experience was fun.
