Day 17 – (05/19) Cape Canaveral, FL (Day 1)

Today was beautiful.  It was mostly sunny with a light breeze.  Temperatures reached the mid-80s again.

We left at 10am and drove 239 miles north to Cape Canaveral.  The route: north on US 1, north on the Florida Turnpike to Ft. Pierce, east on FL 70 to US 1, north on US 1 to Vero Beach, then jogged east a little to FL A1A (you can’t drive further east without getting really wet) and took A1A north to Cape Canaveral.

We passed Miami, Hialeah, Hollywood, Ft. Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Coral Springs and West Palm Beach.

Unfortunately, the Love Bugs returned as we passed the Miami area.  They pestered (and plastered) us all day.

The drive from Vero Beach to Cape Canaveral is part of the National Geographic Indian River Lagoon Scenic Highway route (P137).  Vero Beach wins today's prize for the most beautiful and desirable place to live.
Vero Beach was very peaceful
Carol couldn't resist the warm Atlantic surf
We’re camped in site #120 at Jetty Park Campground.   It's Thursday and Endeavour (STS-134) launched on Monday ... the park is about 1/4 filled today.

Port Canaveral is the home of Disney Cruise Line.  Their cruises depart from terminal 8, next to our campground.  This ship (we think it’s called Wonder) was departing as we pulled in.
Wonder departs
Unfortunately, Dick “scuffed” the trailer while backing too close to a tree.  It’s the first trailer accident we’ve had in 25,000+ miles of towing.  He's really bummed.
Observations
Yesterday
Highest gas -$4.199/gal in Key West
Saw no speeding on the trip to and from Key West

Today
Lowest gas - $3.759/gal in Cape Canaveral
Saw lots of speeding and quick lane changes on the Florida Turnpike

Favorite Florida communities so far:  Ft. Myers, Naples and Vero Beach.
