Day 2 - (05/04) Elizabethtown, KY to Walcott, AR

We awoke to a partly sunny, breezy day ... and it got better all day.  The temperature started at 47°F and reached 68°F by mid-afternoon.  The afternoon sky was cloudless.  What a great way to travel highways in four states!

The Route
Western Kentucky Parkway to I-24 to Purchase Parkway to US 51S to I-155 to US 412W to AR 168 took us 359 miles through KY, TN and MO, ending at Crowley's Ridge State Park in Walcott, AR.   We left Elizabethtown at 9:30am and arrived Walcott at 6:15pm.

The Sights
The Western Kentucky Parkway provided a beautiful, pleasant drive.  Traffic was light, trees lined the highway, and the sun warmed the day.

High water was visible from the highway for the entire trip.  Here are some examples.
Now we can understand why towers are so tall.
High water nearly reached the highway in many places.
Did someone leave the irrigation system on overnight?
Crossing the Mississippi - water flows over an access road.
Crossing the Mississippi - a road runs along the phone poles.
The Campground
AR campgrounds have impressed us since our first trip here in 2008.  Crowley's Ridge State Park is no exception.  It's beautiful, clean and very peaceful.  There are just 18 RV sites here, but only 2 were occupied.  A water and electric site cost $14.27 per night.

Though some nearby campgrounds are under water, there is no high water here.  Perhaps the "ridge" location explains our good fortune.

Observation
The city of Paragould, AR left an interesting impression.  We saw more used car and truck dealers along US 412W in this city than anywhere else.

Tomorrow
Some of the roads to Jim & Bobbie Couron's home are closed due to high water.  We'll have to find an alternative route.

  1. I saw the flooding from 36,000 ft this week...it's incredible how far and wide it all is, and not just the Mississippi - all of the tributaries are also flooded. I wish all the folks well.
