Day 10 – (05/12) Carrabelle, FL to Dade City, FL

Carol had another bad night … with lots of coughing and very little sleep.  We considered staying on the shore at Carrabelle for another day, but she wanted to keep going.
Morning on the Gulf was overcast
We continued eastward along the Gulf coast, headed inland at Homosassa Springs, and ended the day near Dade City.  The 282 mile trip had some interesting sights and stops.  The route: southeast on US 98 to Otter Creek, southwest on FL 24 to Cedar Key, northeast on FL 24 back to US 98, southeast on US 98 and then “Babe” (our GPS) took us the rest of the way to Travelers Rest RV Resort outside of Dade City.

The Gulf overcast quickly burned off.  Temperatures reached the mid-90s.  It was humid.  The drive was pleasant.

Cross City – This DQ had a beautiful setting among moss covered trees and it was RV friendly.  We considered having a Blizzard on a hot day to be prudent medical treatment.
Cross City had a great DQ
Cedar Key – This stop was in honor of Fred and Ann Hitzhusen.  They visit here often and love it.  We don’t know the background like they do.  These pictures offer a taste of why they come back.  We drove in and out, but didn't feel good enough to explore the area.

Lot's of fishing here
Lots of water, too
Observations – Gas hit $4.099 per gal.  We’ve seen more RV sales, campgrounds and mobile home parks in Florida than in any other state.  There are armadillos down here, lots of 50s style motels and lots of retired folks (hmm?).

Travelers Rest RV Resort – This stop was special for Carol.  Her parents lived here for about 10 years after retiring.  The following pictures show their home and some places with special meaning to the family.
This was the Gearhart's home
Snack Shack ... near Lake Margaret
Lake Margaret
Gazebo ... near Lake Margaret
Nature Garden ... Carol's dad was instrumental in creating it
Busch Hall ... houses post office, country store, rest rooms, laundry and meeting room
Site #70-12 ... we're all alone by the 2nd hole of the golf course
View of golf course and pond from our front door
Cranes enjoy a quiet evening
Travelers Rest is a double 5 star RV resort, founded by Airstreamers in 1972.  It's about 10 miles west of Dade City.  We arrived in off-season.  The resort has 60 sites in the Golf View section where we are ... only 4 are occupied.  We’re going to stay here for two days.
