Day 11 – (05/13) Dade City, FL (Day 2)

Carol had a bit more sleep last night.  We started the day late and went for a swim in the indoor pool.

We left for Weeki Wachee Springs State Park at about noon.  We’re going to see the mermaids!

Background – Named by the Seminole Indians, Weeki Wachee means “little spring” or “winding river”.  More than 170 million gallons of water per day bubble out of the subterranean caverns here.  The spring’s basin is 100 feet wide with limestone sides.  The mermaids are challenged to stay in one place because 16 to 20 feet below the surface the current runs a strong five miles per hour.  The mermaids began performing in 1947.

We saw three shows:  Fish Tails, Animal Show and The Little Mermaid.

The Grounds

Fish Tales
This was a live underwater performance showing how the mermaids do what they do.  One of the mermaids held her breath for 2 minutes and 34 seconds in a 100’ deep dive.

Animal Show
Emily and Clint gave a fun, interactive animal show.  We (and all the other children) got to touch snakes, toads and an alligator.
Emily narrates and Clint displays the animals
Carol pets a Florida Pine Snake.  It felt soft and dry.

The Little Mermaid
The black lines are air hoses, not microphones
There are 16 mermaids.
They can hear applause and sing with the soundtrack under water.
They train for about 3 years before they can do a deep dive.
Yup, this must be a mermaid!
We had dinner at Ruby Tuesday.

Carol did laundry after we returned to Travelers Rest.  Dick updated the blog and cleaned filters on the air conditioner and ceiling fans.
