Day 13 – (05/15) Dade City, FL to Ft. Myers, FL

We had a nasty thunderstorm early this morning.  Heavy rain, lightning, thunder and strong winds pounded the area for more than an hour.  We watched the action from 3:30am to 4:00am and were grateful we weren't in a tent or a pop-up trailer.

It was sunny and calm when we got up at 7:45am.

We knew we wanted to visit Janet Jimenez in Barto, FL today, but had no idea where we would end the day.  Here’s how the day went …

We showered, connected the trailer and hit the road by 10:15am.  We drove 187 miles.  The route: south on US 98 to Lakeland, through Lakeland to Barto and east on FL 60 to Janet’s home.  We then took FL 60 west to US 17, south on US 17 to I-75 at Punta Gorda, then south on I-75 to Ft. Myers.  We’re camped at Upriver RV Resort.

Barto – Janet and Dick worked together at FASPAC in San Diego.  Carol and I haven’t seen her for more than 6 years. She is a very dear friend.  It was wonderful to visit her.
Janet let us park off the street (we stayed off her porch)
It's great to see Janet again

Ft. Myers – We continue to travel without advance reservations.  RV parks in Florida appear to have lots of vacancies at this time of year.  However, it took three attempts to find an acceptable campground today.  Try #1 – the park was large, most sites were filled with extended stay units, the facility was dated, and the office was closed.  Try #2 – the facility was dated, the office was closed and there were no instructions for a late check-in.  Try #3 – Upriver RV Resort was the only facility where a human answered the phone late in the day on a Sunday … and the facility is very nice.

Observations
Bugs are all over down here.  A clean windshield only lasts a few minutes and the front of the trailer is covered … yuk!

The Garmin GPS continues to amaze us.  Routing has been reliable and initial arrival time estimates are very accurate.  It has been invaluable on this trip.
